Bangladesh Bank's Real Time Gross Settlement system processed 10,174,214 local currency transactions valued at BDT 5,001,080 crore during 2024. The system also settled 785,310 USD-denominated transactions worth $32,896 million in the same period. These figures represent continued growth in high-value digital payment adoption in a market historically dominated by mobile financial services through providers like bKash.
Bangladesh Bank launched an upgraded RTGS platform on 25 February 2025, replacing the original system that had been operational since October 2015. The new platform supports seven-day-a-week operations and processes transactions in seven currencies: taka, US dollar, British pound, euro, Japanese yen, Canadian dollar, and Chinese yuan. Chinese yuan settlement was added in February 2024. More than 11,231 online branches of 60 scheduled commercial banks and 19 non-bank financial institutions are connected to the system.
In the first four months of 2025, the system processed 3,790,380 local currency transactions valued at BDT 1,870,830 crore, alongside 281,946 USD transactions, 78 euro transactions, and 7 Chinese yuan transactions. From 5 October 2025, Bangladesh Bank restricted customer RTGS transactions between 16:00 and 17:00 BDT to online channels only, a measure aimed at reducing branch-based processing during the final settlement hour. The transaction fee remains BDT 100 per transaction.
