The Banco Central do Brasil published Instrução Normativa 746 on June 16, 2026, abolishing the R$500 per-transaction limit on PIX por Aproximação contactless payments. Financial institutions must implement the changes by October 1, 2026.

The R$500 cap was introduced in BCB Instrução Normativa 512 of August 2024 as a precautionary measure during the early contactless PIX rollout. Under the new rule, NFC-initiated PIX transactions follow the same general ceilings that apply to payments via QR code or PIX key.

Apple signaled to CADE in early June 2026 that it is willing to negotiate an agreement to permit PIX por Aproximação on iPhones without charging NFC licensing fees to financial institutions.
