Bangladesh's Electronic Funds Transfer Network settled approximately BDT 9,083 billion through debit and credit instructions during FY2023-24, averaging roughly BDT 36 billion per business day across 61 scheduled banks. The system, operated by Bangladesh Bank since its February 2011 launch, serves as the primary channel for institutional batch payments including government salaries, social safety net disbursements, pension transfers, and corporate payments.

BEFTN operates on Bangladesh's Sunday-to-Thursday work week, processing credit transfers that typically settle next business day through Bangladesh Bank's RTGS system. The system handles both credit and debit transactions: payroll, dividend payments, insurance premiums, foreign and domestic remittances, and person-to-person transfers. All government salary payments and social safety net transfers flow through BEFTN, making it a core component of Bangladesh's public financial infrastructure.

In November 2023, Bangladesh Bank launched Nikash, a modernized platform replacing the original BEFTN architecture. Nikash increased processing capacity from 600,000 transactions per hour to 4.6 million, a 7.7-fold improvement designed to accommodate growing electronic payment volumes. The upgrade maintained backward compatibility with existing BEFTN processes while introducing enhanced security and monitoring capabilities.

Bangladesh's retail payment market is dominated by mobile financial services. bKash serves over 60 million users while Nagad reaches more than 30 million, together handling most retail person-to-person transfers. BEFTN serves the institutional and corporate batch segment, processing high-volume payroll and government disbursements that require reliability and auditability rather than instant settlement. The National Payment Switch Bangladesh processed over 154 million transactions worth approximately BDT 2.71 trillion in 2024, handling the interbank instant payment function that complements BEFTN's batch clearing role.

Transaction volume data for BEFTN is not published separately by Bangladesh Bank, limiting direct comparison with peer ACH systems. The FY2023-24 settlement total reached BDT 9,083 billion. During Ramadan, Bangladesh Bank compresses BEFTN sessions to 11:30 AM through 1:30 PM to accommodate the shorter business day.
