Krajowa Izba Rozliczeniowa, commonly known as KIR, launched Express Elixir in June 2012, making Poland one of the earliest adopters of instant payments in Europe. Only the United Kingdom's Faster Payments Service predates it among European instant payment systems. KIR was established in 1991 on the initiative of the Polish Bank Association, 16 commercial banks, and the National Bank of Poland, and serves as the country's primary clearing infrastructure operator.
Express Elixir enables real-time zloty transfers around the clock, every day of the year, including weekends and public holidays. Transactions settle within seconds of initiation. The system supports transfers up to PLN 100,000 per transaction and is accessible through online banking platforms, mobile applications, and BLIK, Poland's widely adopted mobile payment standard. BLIK person-to-person transfers, which allow users to send money using a phone number, are processed through the Express Elixir infrastructure.
In 2025, Express Elixir processed 636 million transactions with a combined value of PLN 321 billion, according to KIR. This translates to approximately 1.74 million transactions per day settling PLN 879 million. The most recent monthly data shows continued acceleration. February 2026 recorded 50.67 million transactions worth PLN 26.14 billion, representing an 11.3 percent increase in volume and a 13.6 percent increase in value compared to February 2025, when the system handled 45.54 million transactions worth PLN 23.01 billion.
Express Elixir is available through 25 commercial banks and more than 450 cooperative banks, giving the system broad reach across Poland's banking sector. Individual banks set their own pricing for instant transfers, while KIR guarantees uninterrupted system availability.
The system operates alongside KIR's batch clearing service, Elixir, which handles standard credit transfers with same-day settlement. The two systems are complementary, with Express Elixir capturing a growing share of total interbank clearing volumes. In February 2026, instant transfers accounted for roughly 10 percent of all transfers processed through KIR's clearing systems.
Express Elixir settles in central bank money through accounts at the National Bank of Poland, providing finality of payment upon completion. Poland also participates in the broader European instant payment ecosystem through SEPA Instant Credit Transfer, which enables cross-border instant transfers across participating countries. The European Union's Instant Payments Regulation, which took effect in October 2025, requires all euro-denominated SEPA participants to support instant payments, further reinforcing the infrastructure that Express Elixir pioneered domestically over a decade ago.
