ING Deutschland activated Wero e-commerce functionality on June 3, extending the European payment wallet to online retail checkout. The bank serves approximately 10 million customers in Germany. Around 600,000 have already activated Wero for person-to-person payments, representing 15 percent of current account holders and one of the highest take-up rates in the German market.
ING simplified Wero onboarding by integrating the scheme's terms into its general current account conditions, enabling automatic consent upon account opening. Transactions settle within 10 seconds via the SEPA Instant Credit Transfer rail.
IKEA Germany and the Lidl online shop are confirmed as forthcoming Wero merchants, adding to established acceptance at Eventim, Decathlon, Rossmann, Hornbach, and other German retailers. ING plans to extend Wero e-commerce to Belgium and the Netherlands, with the Dutch rollout aligned to the iDEAL-to-Wero migration in Q4 2026.
