EPFO 3.0 went live on April 1, 2026, enabling instant provident fund withdrawals through UPI for the first time. Over 80 million active EPF subscribers can now access up to 75 percent of their eligible balance within 24 hours using Aadhaar-verified biometric authentication and UPI PIN. The per-transaction withdrawal cap is INR 25,000, with auto-settlement limits set at INR 5 lakh.
Withdrawals require active Universal Account Numbers linked with verified Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account details. EPFO consolidated its thirteen withdrawal categories into three groups covering essential needs, housing, and special circumstances. Partial withdrawals for medical emergencies, education, and marriage are credited within three business days once biometric verification is complete.
The launch extends UPI beyond retail payments into government benefit disbursement, connecting India's largest social security fund to its instant payment infrastructure. Automatic PF balance transfers between employers after KYC verification replace the manual portability process.
