NPCI CEO Dilip Asbe outlined a strategy on August 10 to expand UPI to 15-20 international markets over the next decade. The push targets India's 35 million diaspora members, who sent $155 billion in remittances in the fiscal year ended March 2026.
UPI currently operates in nine countries for merchant payments. NPCI is in active discussions with Malaysia and Bahrain to extend coverage.
NPCI is also exploring agentic AI payment integrations with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Alphabet's Gemini to enable UPI transactions within conversational AI platforms.
