When the Banco Central do Brasil launched PIX Automatico on June 16, 2025, it created a new pathway for recurring payments in a country where 60 million adults lack access to credit cards. Nine months later, early performance data suggests the feature is gaining traction faster than many anticipated.

Payment processing data from EBANX, one of Latin America's largest cross-border payment platforms, reveals that PIX Automatico subscriptions have been growing at approximately 34 percent month over month, while total transaction volume has increased at roughly 41 percent per month since launch. In the first six months alone, subscriptions tripled and payment volumes quadrupled compared to the initial rollout period.

The adoption pattern among new customers is particularly notable. Approximately 74 percent of new customers acquired through EBANX partner merchants chose PIX Automatico for their first purchase, suggesting that the recurring instant payment option is actively bringing new consumers into digital commerce rather than merely replacing existing payment methods. Hotmart, one of Brazil's largest digital content platforms, reported a 32 percentage point improvement in subscriber retention when offering PIX Automatico compared to alternative payment methods.

These results reflect the structural advantages of the system. Unlike credit card recurring charges, which require card details and are subject to expiration and replacement cycles, PIX Automatico debits directly from a customer's bank account with a single consent authorization. The feature carries significantly lower fees for merchants than card-based recurring billing while remaining free for consumers.

BCB Resolution 402 mandated that all PIX participating institutions offer PIX Automatico by October 2025, ensuring universal availability across the more than 900 entities in the PIX ecosystem. This regulatory push mirrors the approach BCB took with the core PIX system, using mandatory participation to accelerate network effects rather than waiting for organic adoption.

Industry projections estimate that PIX Automatico could process approximately USD 30 billion in recurring payment transactions annually by June 2027, representing roughly 12 percent of total annual PIX financial volume. If this trajectory holds, it would establish PIX Automatico as one of the largest recurring payment systems in Latin America within two years of launch.

The competitive implications extend beyond Brazilian borders. As PIX continues its international expansion with cross-border merchant payments now live in Argentina since March 2026, the Automatico feature positions PIX as a comprehensive payment platform capable of handling both one-time and recurring transactions. For global subscription businesses targeting the Brazilian market, PIX Automatico offers a direct channel to consumers who were previously unreachable through card-based billing.

The challenge ahead lies in converting strong early growth into sustained adoption across a broader merchant base. While early adopters in digital content and e-commerce have shown promising results, extending PIX Automatico into utilities, insurance, and traditional service industries will require additional infrastructure development and consumer education. The accreditation deadline for non-authorized payment institutions, now set at May 1, 2026 under BCB Resolution 429, will further reshape competition by requiring smaller participants to formalize their PIX participation or exit the system.
