The European Payments Initiative has deferred Wero's NFC-based point-of-sale payment feature to 2027. Chris Scheuermann of EPI confirmed the postponement in a report published April 1. Germany had been designated as the first POS market with a second-half 2026 target set by EPI's retail partners.
The delay extends the timeline for Wero to challenge Apple Pay and Google Pay at physical checkout terminals by approximately one year. EPI has not disclosed the reason for the schedule change.
Wero will continue expanding e-commerce acceptance through 2026, with subscription payment storage among planned additions for the year.
