Wero Defers NFC Point-of-Sale Payments to 2027
The delay extends the timeline for Wero to challenge Apple Pay and Google Pay at physical checkout terminals by approximately one year. EPI has not disclosed the reason for the schedule change.

The 2027 deferral applies specifically to SEPA Instant Credit Transfer-based NFC. Card-based NFC, where users load existing CB/Visa/Mastercard credentials into the Wero wallet, remains planned for autumn 2026 per EPI communication to Moneyvox and BPCE's April 20 press release.
The European Payments Initiative has deferred Wero's NFC-based point-of-sale payment feature to 2027. Chris Scheuermann of EPI confirmed the postponement in a report published April 1. Germany had been designated as the first POS market with a second-half 2026 target set by EPI's retail partners.
