The National Bank of Cambodia officially launched Bakong on 28 October 2020, making Cambodia the first country in Asia to put a central-bank-operated distributed-ledger retail payment backbone into production. Bakong provides a shared platform on which commercial banks, microfinance institutions and payment service providers deliver e-wallet and money transfer services. It is fiat-backed rather than a central bank digital currency: balances represent riel or US dollar reserves held at the central bank, and NBC officials have publicly stated that Bakong is a backbone payment system rather than a digital currency.
