Chile also operates LBTR as its RTGS layer; TEF is the retail layer and settles through the low-value clearing house rather than a dedicated 24/7 instant rail. The Banco Central de Chile transfer figures count only interbank transfers between natural persons holding different RUT, so transfers between a person's own accounts and person-to-business flows are excluded and the true TEF total is higher. The central bank's August 2026 Payment Systems Report finds TEF use still concentrated in person-to-person transfers rather than payments at merchants, which is the gap its forthcoming rule consultation is intended to close.
