Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto confirmed the integration at a joint press conference in Jakarta on July 7 during Modi's state visit. The agreement will enable Indian travelers to make retail payments using UPI-enabled apps at participating Indonesian merchants without exchanging currency.

India has already linked UPI for merchant payments in ten countries including Singapore, the UAE, Sri Lanka, and France.

No specific implementation timeline was announced. The payment link formed part of a broader bilateral package covering critical minerals, technology, and defense.
