Brazil's PIX instant payment system set new all-time records in 2025, processing 79.8 billion transactions that moved R$ 35.36 trillion in total value, according to data released by the Banco Central do Brasil in early 2026. The figures represent a 33.6% increase in value over 2024, when PIX handled R$ 26.24 trillion.
The growth trajectory continued the extraordinary adoption curve that has made PIX one of the most successful instant payment deployments in the world. The system now averages approximately 219 million transactions per day, with peak days regularly exceeding 300 million. The daily average value processed through the system reached approximately R$ 97 billion, underscoring the scale at which Brazilian consumers and businesses have embraced the platform for everything from small peer-to-peer transfers to large commercial transactions.
The year also marked significant milestones in PIX's feature evolution. PIX Automatico, the long-awaited recurring payments functionality, launched on June 16, 2025, enabling consumers to authorize automatic periodic payments for subscriptions, utility bills, and other recurring charges. The feature became mandatory for all PIX participants in October 2025, ensuring universal availability across the Brazilian financial system.
PIX por Aproximacao, the NFC contactless payment capability, went live in February 2025, integrating with Google Wallet on Android devices and allowing users to make instant payments by tapping their phones at merchant terminals. The feature eliminated the need for QR code scanning in physical retail environments, bringing PIX closer to the ease-of-use associated with contactless card payments.
Person-to-business transactions continued to outpace person-to-person transfers, a trend that began in September 2025. Monthly transaction volumes reached approximately 7.9 billion by December 2025, reflecting the system's deepening penetration into commercial payments. PIX now serves over 175 million users, covering approximately 93% of Brazil's adult population, with 62% citing it as their most frequent payment method.
The Banco Central do Brasil has continued to strengthen the system's regulatory framework alongside its growth. New cybersecurity requirements for PIX environments took effect on March 1, 2026, mandating multi-factor authentication for administrative access and physical and logical isolation of PIX infrastructure. The enhanced Special Return Mechanism (MED 2.0) became mandatory on February 2, 2026, improving fraud recovery capabilities with end-to-end transaction tracing.
