EPI, Dutch banks, and payment service providers confirmed a joint iDEAL-to-Wero migration roadmap on July 16, 2026, in coordination with industry bodies including Thuiswinkel.org, eCommerce Europe, and the Dutch Payments Association.

All Dutch issuing banks will be connected to Wero by October 2026. Merchant-level migration begins in Q4 2026 as PSPs including Adyen, Buckaroo, CM.com, and Mollie define individual migration strategies.

Wero scheme pricing will remain broadly aligned with current iDEAL levels until December 31, 2028. The participating parties reaffirmed their shared objective to complete the full migration from iDEAL to Wero by December 31, 2027.

Update (2026-10-02): bunq has made Wero available for person-to-person payments and online purchases in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium, according to a European Payments Initiative release datelined Amsterdam, 8 September 2026. EPI published the release on 21 September 2026. The release calls bunq the first bank to complete the rollout of both e-commerce and person-to-person payments across all four markets. Using just a phone number, bunq personal and business users can send money to anyone in the participating markets, and they can select Wero at checkout on participating merchant sites, paying straight from their bunq account with no card details required. EPI describes Wero as live for P2P payments in Belgium, France and Germany since 2024.

The migration roadmap agreed by EPI, Dutch banks and payment service providers connects all Dutch banks to Wero by October 2026, after which iDEAL|Wero payments will gradually transition to the Wero infrastructure, the Dutch Payments Association said.

Wero serves 60 million users, EPI said in the bunq release. Wero has been live for e-commerce in Germany since the end of 2025, with progressive rollout in France and Belgium through 2026, according to EPI. The Dutch Payments Association says a lot will change for banks, payment service providers and online retailers, and that in some cases they will need to make significant adjustments.

Update (2026-10-11): ABN AMRO tells business customers with an iDEAL contract that they can start the technical transition to Wero from 21 October 2026. At that stage, standard payments, refunds and e-invoicing become available. From 21 October 2026, buyer protection on Wero payments is available to foreign consumers; for Dutch consumers it follows later. The bank expects iDEAL to remain available through December 2027.

The switch requires some technical changes on the merchant side, such as connecting to new APIs, adapting payment pages and processing Wero transactions in the merchant's administration. ABN AMRO supports the move with its Developer Portal, which offers APIs, a sandbox for testing and technical documentation; the iDEAL Merchant Portal, which carries frequently asked questions, a logo guide and an implementation guide for transaction administration; e-mail updates; and a service desk reachable by e-mail. The bank lets each merchant decide when to switch, at the moment that best suits its business.

New functions are added step by step during 2027. From April 2027, the bank's timeline has Wero expanding with new payment options such as subscriptions and payment on shipment or delivery.
