Erste Bank Oesterreich, Raiffeisen Bank International, and three Raiffeisen Landesbanken became shareholders of the European Payments Initiative on June 22. The additions bring EPI's shareholder count to 18 European banks and payment service providers. Wero currently serves 55 million registered users across Belgium, France, and Germany.
The two Austrian banking groups together serve the majority of the country's approximately nine million retail banking customers. PSA Payment Services Austria has been preparing Wero issuing infrastructure since January 2026, though no consumer launch date for the Austrian market has been announced.
