Luxembourg will discontinue Payconiq from October 2026. The move makes it the first country where Wero completely replaces an existing national mobile payment system. Five banks formalized EPI membership in June 2025: BGL BNP Paribas, Bil, Banque Raiffeisen, Spuerkeess, and Post Luxembourg. These institutions are building a standalone Wero app with technical partner LUXHUB, targeting launch from July 2026 per the Luxembourg Bankers' Association. Payconiq and Wero will coexist from July through September 2026, giving users and merchants a three-month transition window.
Buckaroo is handling the merchant portfolio migration from Payconiq to Wero. Payconiq's merchant guidance instructs operators not to print new QR codes for use after summer 2026. Luxembourg's bank account coverage rate stands at approximately 90 percent, with between 870,000 and 990,000 compatible accounts.
The Netherlands faces a larger version of the same transition, migrating iDEAL across 210,000 to 350,000 acceptance points by end of 2027. Luxembourg's October 2026 cutover will serve as the first operational test of whether consumers and merchants complete the switch when the legacy system is permanently retired.
