Erste Bank Oesterreich and Raiffeisen Bank International became shareholders of the European Payments Initiative on June 22, 2026. Three Raiffeisen Landesbanken from Lower Austria, Upper Austria, and Styria will also join, subject to their respective supervisory board approvals.
Together these institutions serve a majority of Austria's approximately nine million banking customers. The additions bring EPI's shareholder count to 18 European banks and payment service providers.
Wero currently serves 55 million users across Belgium, France, and Germany. EPI CEO Martina Weimert described the Austrian expansion as part of a broader new phase of growth for Wero across Europe.
