Bankgirot's direct file communication service terminates on 1 July 2026. From that date, all payment file transfers must route through participating banks rather than directly to the clearing house. The deadline marks the first hard cutoff in Sweden's payment infrastructure transformation. Only two smaller banks were sending non-Swish instant payments on RIX-INST as of early 2026, according to TietoEvry analysis published in April.

The migration follows a two-phase structure. Spring 2026 covers account transfers, salaries, and pensions. Autumn 2026 addresses Bankgiro and Plusgiro payment flows. Autogiro and E-invoice services continue operating until further notice. A separate deadline on 1 August 2026 ends salary processing through Bankgirot's KI and Bg Lon services.

Sweden's instant payment ecosystem beyond Swish remains underdeveloped. The Riksbank expects banks to offer instant SEK payments or present credible implementation plans by March 2027. A BIS study ranked Sweden lowest among thirteen countries for supported instant payment use cases. Paying a bill via online banking with immediate recipient arrival is not possible at any major Swedish bank.

TIPS Cross Currency access becomes available for RIX-INST participants in June 2026. The Nordic Payments Council's NOLO instant payment framework is due in November 2026. Swedish businesses will rely on bank-mediated batch processing for most non-Swish commercial payments through the remainder of 2026.
