Nacha has asked ACH participants to respond by Friday, October 23, 2026 to its request for comment on the defined term Banking Day. The proposal would define a Banking Day as a calendar day other than a Saturday, Sunday, or Federal banking holiday in the United States. Nacha has set a proposed effective date of June 18, 2027.
Business Day would be removed from the Nacha Operating Rules as redundant. References to Business Day would be replaced by Banking Day. Sections 7.6 and 7.7 would be consolidated into a single section providing that if an ODFI or RDFI is closed on a Banking Day, settlement still occurs.
Nacha lists greater uniformity and certainty of ACH processing times and deadlines across all ACH participants among the benefits of the change. It also cites better alignment of definitions among Nacha and EPN. A separate Nacha request for information, on whether secure electronic channels should be required for ACH exception processing, takes responses until Friday, November 20, 2026.
