Bizum, Spain's leading account-to-account mobile payment platform, began accepting NFC payments at physical retail terminals on May 18. The service has 30.6 million registered users, covering more than half of Spain's population. CaixaBank, Sabadell, and Bankinter are leading the initial bank-by-bank rollout, with full availability across Spanish financial institutions targeted by year-end.

Payments settle as SEPA Instant Credit Transfers through Iberpay, Spain's national clearing infrastructure. The A2A model bypasses international card schemes entirely, offering merchants lower processing costs than traditional card interchange.

The in-store capability extends beyond Spain through the EuroPA Alliance, which connects Bizum with Italy's Bancomat, Portugal's SIBS, and Andorra's payment infrastructure, reaching 58 million users across four countries.
