CaixaBank, Sabadell, and Bankinter began processing in-store Bizum payments via NFC on May 18, 2026. Santander plans to join in autumn 2026. Full rollout across all 40 participating banks is expected by year-end. Every transaction clears as a SEPA Instant Credit Transfer through Iberpay's SNCE, Spain's domestic clearing system, with settlement completing in seconds.
Bizum has 30.6 million enrolled users across Spain. These users currently generate 3.4 million instant transfers per day in peer-to-peer activity alone. Adding merchant payments to this base could produce a measurable increase in SEPA Inst clearing volumes through TIPS and RT1 during the second half of 2026. Bizum's merchant fees are set below the 0.2 to 2 percent typically charged by card networks.
The EuroPA Alliance connects Bizum with Italy's Bancomat Pay, Portugal's MB WAY, and the Nordic Vipps MobilePay. This extends potential reach to 58 million users across five countries. A separate memorandum of understanding with the European Payments Initiative could link Bizum's base to Wero's 13-country network. If both partnerships become fully operational, the combined user base would exceed 130 million accounts across the eurozone.
